Many painters using Spies Hecker Permasolid HS Speed Clear Coat 8185 do this:

Coat 1: normal mix (no thinner)

Coat 2: add 3–5% thinner
This gives the final coat more flow, eliminating minor orange peel.

⚠️ Unlike 8055, 8085 usually needs little or no thinner because it is already optimized for fast flow.
